2016 Workshop.  3 months of drawing and painting in Bruge, Belgium!!!!

I will be teaching a 3 month atelier workshop in the beautiful city of Bruge, Belgium this March, April and May 2016.   Students will get a good grasp of the whole method behind atelier trainging from blcok-in drawing, modeling "form" value,  color studies, and painting.  This is the best way to get a overall look into what a full atelier training is like.  Come study with me and see this beautiful city this spring!

2015 workshops coming up!

March 20-22, 2015

Two Color Study workshops
Still life Color Study and
Figure Color Study
Townsend Atelier, Chattanooga TN
http://townsendatelier.com

A color study is a mini version of your final painting done prior to starting a final painting. Students will complete an accurate drawing and small oil sketch in this three day workshop.  Discover how a color study is a great way to work out decision with composition, background and color harmony prior to starting your final piece.  Making these important decisions prior to your final painting can save hours of complications in your final work.  Plus, these color  studies make great little painting sketches on their own!

Im Teaching three different workshops coming up this summer!

June 6-8, 2014

Townsend Atelier, Chattanooga TN
 Portrait Block-In & Color Study

10am-5pm

Angela Cunningham has become one of our regular visiting instructors and we are thrilled that she will be joining us to teach a three day workshop  this summer.  Portrait sketches and color studies are a great way to develop your decisive decision making skills.  Working from a model, this portrait workshop will take you through all of the steps, from learning how to draw the portrait and how to choose the right colors to accurately capture a likeness on canvas in oil paint.

The first half of the workshop will be focused on drawing from observation in graphite. Emphasis will be placed on practicing the visual tools of blocking-in.  Students will develop their measuring and shape-seeing abilities. Then the second half of the workshop students will finish with a Color Study.  Students will focus on using form and color to create a 3 dimensional likeness of the model.  Angela will cover the understanding of hue, value and chroma. Organizing a palette as well as a mindset will enforce good controlled decisions and habits that will result in skills to accurately draw and paint what you see.  Model fee is included in the cost of the workshop.  There will be a one hour lunch break each day. Lunch is on your own.

 Still Life & Portrait Painting

Sketches or color studies are a great way to develop your decision making skills. In both these classes, still life and portrait, we will use the first hour of class focusing on block-in. We will draw directly with paint on the canvas. Then we’ll spend the next four hours of class focusing on form and color to create a 3 dimensional likeness of the subject.  Comparative measuring, angles, and alignments, along with hue, value and chroma will be discussed. Organizing a palette as well as a mindset will enforce good controlled decisions and habits that will result in skills to accurately draw and paint what you see.

Each day we will start with a new canvas (average size being 8” x 6”). Having a different subject each day will cultivate an understanding of how to use an open palette and making new color decisions based on the subject matter.  It’s recommended for this class that students have some prior drawing skills.http://cloudcastleartstudio.com

PORTRAIT DRAWING AND STRUCTURE

In this class students draw the Portrait from observation, in graphite. Strong emphasis is placed on accuracy of Block-in and Form Modeling. It is in the understanding and practice of the visual tools of blocking-in that students develop their comparative-measuring and shape-seeing abilities. Focusing on block-ins is a traditional academic training method that allows one to fine-tune foundational skills for high accuracy.  Please check out the Angel Academy's Website for more information and to sign up.   http://www.angelartschool.com/workshop8_2014.html

WORKSHOPS COMING UP:

Picture
North West Fine Art Studio
Vancouver, CANADA
February, 24th - 28th, 2014
Figure/Portrait workshop - $700.00

Class Description: One week Portrait Painting or Drawing

The first day of the workshop will cover the understanding of 2-dimensional block-in using pencil on paper. Having an accurate block-in is the most important stage to drawing and painting. We will work with analyzing and improving our way of seeing to be more accurate to life. Students will learn to see flat shapes (mass drawing) to become more visually abstract with their thought process. Comparative measuring, angles, and alignments as necessary tools to use in a systematical approach will also be covered.

On the second day students will learn how to do an oil transfer of their drawing to canvas, as well as how to complete a one day color study. The rest of the week we will use the understanding of hue, value and chroma to paint 3-Dimensional Form. Organizing a palette as well as a mindset will enforce good controlled decisions and habits that will result in skills to accurately draw and paint what you see.

summer 2014 workshop at Angel Academy of Art in Florence Italy!!

I am excited to announce I will be teaching a summer workshop at the Angel Academy of Art in Florence Italy. Not only is the Angel Academy one of the most influential schools in classical realism but it is set among one of the most beautiful Renaissance cities in Italy. Florence is one of my most favorite cities because among every corner there is the inspiration of art history, from some of the greatest works of art to the beautiful historical buildings and cobble stone streets. It really is like walking back in time. You can feel the passion and creative souls from times past. Its a true Honor to get a chance to teach the methods of my classes in a place thats been such an influence in my own work. This will be an experience not to miss!

Townsend Atelier is proud to participate in an international exhibition project called
Women Painting Women: (R)evolution 2013, a juried show of artwork of women by women. The exhibit promotes the visibility of the best contemporary female artists portraying female subjects in the figurative tradition and showcases the quality, variety and breadth of woman making figurative art in the 21st Century. Works are available for purchase and include painting, drawing, printmaking and pastel.

Over 500 entries were received from female artists from 26 states in the US, Canada, Germany, Spain, the Netherlands and the Philippines. Juror and independent curator, Ellen Simak selected 36 works for this incredible exhibition.

Selected works will be on view September 7-28 at Townsend Atelier in Chattanooga, TN.

ART THROW DOWN!
demo: 5:00-8:00 p.m.
It's not a proper exhibit opening without an ART THROW DOWN!

Have you ever been amazed at how differently some artists see the same subject?  Ever wonder if artists are competitive with each other?  Have you been curious about the different ways painters begin their paintings?

Join us for this free demonstration "Throw Down" with  Townsend Atelier instructors Cindy Procious and Mia Bergeron.  Watch as each artist starts, carries, and refines a portrait from life to its completion. Although Cindy andMia are close friends, watch them go brush to brush for this three hour painting demonstration, filled with laughs, antics and surprises. Questions, comments and hollering are all recommended from the audience.  Both paintings created during the demonstration will be auctioned at the end of the night at 8pm

Fine Art Connoisseur, October issue

I'd like to thank Peter Trippi for including me in this months issue of Fine Art Connoisseur as one of three artist to watch. Attached is the section of the article that he wrote on me.

today ’ s ma s t e r s
Artists Making Their Mark
There is a lot of superb art being made these days; this column shines light on a trio of gifted individuals.

ANGELA CUNNINGHAM (b. 1977) personifies the hard-won
virtuosity and still-untapped potential of today’s younger classically
trained artists.
Her path thus far is typical of her peers in classical realism. Born and
raised in the Bay Area, Cunningham studied at various art colleges, ultimately
earning her B.F.A. in drawing and painting, with a minor in sculpture,
from Laguna College of Art and Design. After teaching in California
for a few years, she decided to master the classical approach to drawing
and painting under the mentorship of Jacob Collins at New York City’s
rigorous Grand Central Academy of Art. She shone brilliantly there and
graduated last year, though the academy does not actually issue an M.F.A.
Cunningham now teaches at her own atelier in Asheville, North Carolina,
and also at other studios around the country, especially in New York at
Grand Central and the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art’s Beaux-
Arts Atelier. A talented sculptor in her own right, she assisted Meredith
Bergmann earlier this year (see page 79).
First and foremost, Cunningham is an outstanding draftsman, a gift
equally crucial to the success of her oil paintings and sculptures of individuals
(both nudes and heads). Admiring her works, we know exactly
where to locate the model, the artist, and ourselves: every area has been
thought through and executed deftly. Moreover, Cunningham’s superb
color studies reveal that line is not her only concern.
The challenge now for Cunningham, and indeed for others of her
generation, is to infuse these extraordinary skills with her own spirit, to
rise above the serenity — some might say sterility — of the atelier and to
speak for herself. Although multi-figure compositions may offer a way
forward, even a well-chosen single figure can communicate something
profound about both model and artist. Cunningham, it seems, need not
alter her look so much as her emphasis. She is ideally equipped to take
flight, and it will be a pleasure to see where she takes us.

Delicate

It has been awhile since I've had a chance to do a still life painting. I had alot of fun going through the process of this painting. I started the drawing a few months back and had to put it on hold when I moved this summer. Soon after I got to Asheville a friend contacted me asking if I would be interested in doing a Vanitas (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vanitas) painting for an upcoming book. Thought this would be the perfect reason to reset up and finish the still life I had started. Below is the drawing I completed, the color study and final painting titled "Delicate".
