CLASSICAL ARCHITECTURE & ART EXHIBIT

Exhibition to be on display from July through September 2011

NEW YORK CITY, July 6th, 2011- Gensler, the global architecture, design,

planning and consulting firm, announces today that it has partnered with the

Institute of Classical Architecture & Art (ICAA) for the newest in-office

exhibition. The exhibit, The Classical Ideal, is curated by ICAA Fellows Briana

Miller, Steve Bass, and Andy Taylor, and will be on display at Gensler in New

York through September this year. It is viewable by appointment.

“Gensler's art program and educational platform is built on establishing a

diverse appreciation of the arts. We learn from both contemporary ideas and

historical influences. Classical architecture reminds us of the rigor of our

profession and the role it has played in the foundation of culture and

design. We are pleased to house the current exhibit and support the ICAA's

mission,” shares Gensler Principal and ICAA Advisor Tom Vecchione.

The Classical Ideal exhibition features a myriad of drawings, paintings,

renderings, plaster casts, sculpture and prints. The exhibit’s pieces on display

celebrate both the history and the future of classicism as a living language

for artistic expression. From the 17th century until the early 20th century,

artists and architects received rigorous classical training at the École des

Beaux-Arts and worked collaboratively to create some of the most well

known buildings and notable works of art. Today, they continue to practice

and teach in this tradition throughout the world. The exhibition presents a

sampling of student, instructor, and practitioner work, as well as pedagogical

pieces from the ICAA and its fine art and design branches, the Grand Central

Academy of Art and the Beaux-Arts Atelier, respectively.

“The ICAA is delighted to showcase these works at the Gensler office, and for

this chance to tell the story of contemporary classicism and its practice in

America today. We believe that sustaining the lessons of the past, and

drawing from cultural memory as parts of a modern architectural toolbox, are

worthy missions. This exhibit encourages us to that educational end,” says

Institute president, Paul Gunther.

The male painting is one day, 2 hour session. The female painting is a four day, 4 hours each sessions.

I have been enjoying the practice of working quick while still using the same methods of thinking form as I do on my longer paintings.

I am returning to Asheville, North Carolina this summer to teach three workshop at the Fine Arts League of the Carolinas. Last summers workshop at FALC went so well! Plus the Blue Ridge Mountains of NC are one of my favorite places to visit. So, I am glad to be getting another chance to take a break from city life to come down and share some drawing and sculpting techniques to those of you who can join me in Asheville. I will be teaching a duo class- 1/2 day cast drawing and 1/2 day cast sculpture for two weeks July 11-22, 2011. And then a portrait drawing class all day from July 25-29. Best of two cities

photos are views of Kelly Drive, along the river behind the Philadelphia Art museum. So far one of my favorite places to go in Philly. Great place to ride bikes and amazingly beautiful at sunset.

Philadelphia is the home of my new studio space. Im renovating an old carriage stables into a beautiful, livable studio space with two other studio mates. Pictures and more info coming soon.

I have just concluded my three and a half years at the Grand Central Academy. I have much gratitude for all the teachers and fellow classmates that have made these past few years an amazing experience!!

This year’s awards in the figure category were based primarily on a group of figure works. Will’s figure painting over the last year displays a deep understanding of the human form and conveys a mood that transcends academic study while showing a commitment to a classical aesthetic. Angela’s figure drawings are a meditation on form, expertly supported by a foundation of solid anatomy. From her figure drawing to figure sculpture to cast painting, she is developing into the sort of well-rounded artist rarely seen over the past century.

This year’s awards in the cast category were based on the completion of a single spectacular piece. Carla displayed constant focus during class and did some of the best block in and form work seen this year. Emilie chose one of the most difficult casts and inspired us all with her patience and perseverance to bring her piece to successful completion.

Quick portrait study

With the addition of sculpture being added to the GCA program, I have yet again fallen capture to the 3 dimensional form. I definitely have a passion for sculpture as much as I do for painting and cant see doing one without the other. I have concentrated a lot this year on sculpting and feel it has helped tremendously with my drawings as well. Here are just a few examples of the years work.

GCA's 2nd Annual Classical Figure Sculpture Competition took place
last week in GCA's Sculpture Atelier from June 8 - 12. Twelve finalists competed in a
40 hour competition, modeling a half-size figure from life.

The sculptures were judged Friday evening, 6:00 - 8:00pm.
Judges Jacob Collins, Stuart Feldman and Richard Cameron
awarded the following:

First Place - Joshua Koffman
Second Place - Kate Brockman
Third Place - Jiwoong, Cheh
Honorable Mention - Julia McGeehan & Angela Cunningham

So, I haven't been real good these past two years on keeping my website updated so I figured starting a blog would help keep friends and family updated on my new work and any new events happening here in New York.

Here's a quick overview of the last two years for those of you who don't know. I moved to New York almost two years ago to study at Grand Central Academy of Art. Studying under Jacob Collins and other GCA faculty has pushed my work further then I have ever thought possible. The concentration put on form and details is just what I've been looking for to take my work to the next level. My first two years have been mostly focused on drawing cast and figure, and I'm now starting to focus more on painting and sculpture. I promise to keep an ongoing update of my work in progress and hope you enjoy seeing the progression of my studies. Please feel free to leave comments and suggestions, the input is always helpful.
